Believing bad things about a/c
For nearly a decade, I taught middle school in a foreign country.
Though I could have made a fortune teaching English overseas, I decided to volunteer my efforts, asking only for a meager salary to provide for my yearly necessities.
I realized in that decade that there are several differences between foreign countries and our own. In the country that I was in, there was a lot of controversy over the use of air conditioners while it was hot. They believed air conditioning system should only be used while it is cold because our bodies were accustomed to handling the cold. During the summer, they were firmly against using the air conditioner, especially if it is tepid outside. They said that the air conditioner would make you sick and that the heat was good for your body, but nearly every public stadium had no air conditioning system. Some of them even believed that air conditioners caused cancer, and refused to use them. If any of the people in this town used the air conditioner, they would set the temperature control to 90 degrees, which defeated the whole point of having an air conditioner. While I was teaching, students and parents would complain about how much I used the air conditioner. I wasn’t going to have it though. I always used my air conditioner. I was volunteering to teach in a foreign nation, although I wasn’t volunteering to live without an air conditioner. These kids were apparently hot, and without the air conditioner, the room always smelled terrible! It never ceases to amaze me how different other cultures can be!
