My grandmother’s air conditioning unit was as ancient as her Billy Graham cassette tape collection. She had been using the same HVAC provider for decades – though the business had changed owners and names a few times. Her HVAC was first installed as one of the first ones on the block. The neighbors all had their own furnaces and kept a hearty supply of ice chips in the ice box come summer time. My grandmother, having just landed a new gig at the jewelry counter, had her furnace ripped out and the parts sold for cash. This along with her cool new gig allowed her to get a state of the art central heating and cooling system. The neighborhood kids would try to come over, and in order to win her over their parents would bring over cakes fresh out of the heated oven, just out of the kindness of their hearts of course. One by one the others in the neighborhood were able to get their own heating systems for the winter, all with one of the three or four HVAC companies that served the area. My grandmother swore that her HVAC provider was the best in show, and had become friends with the many HVAC technicians who would come every 6 months on the dot for cleaning and systems check-up. As times wore on and the HVAC company changed hands, some greedy businessmen would try to get her to get services and installations she didn’t need. But, her having known the oldest people in the company, she didn’t fall for it. She would make sure the HVAC business veterans would be the ones to come over and tell it to her straight!
